How long have you been writing?
I’ve always loved to write, but I started writing with the goal of getting published about nine years ago. I currently have middle grade books and a picture book out, so this was a new writing adventure for me.
What did you do before you became an author?
I was a teacher. (Mostly for 3rd and 4th grade) It was when I was on leave with my kids that I started pursuing a writing career.
What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
I love getting to talk about reading and writing and books with kids. Seeing them excited about reading inspires me to keep writing.
What inspired you to write this book?
A box fort in the middle of my living room. 😉 It’s true. I was thinking about what kids like to do these days and the answer was literally right in front of me.
What type of book are you writing? What draws you to this category?
My newest release is an early chapter book series. I love variety, so I also write middle grade and picture books. But I’m really excited about this new venture because the books are for an age range that is growing in their reading skills and curious about different topics. You can have a lot of fun with that.
What would you like potential readers to know about your book?
It’s a story about teamwork and friendship and how working together makes all the difference. Plus there are some cool extras in this series, including a cast of characters, a word list, discussion questions, and a STEM/STEAM activity at the end!
What are your social media handles?
You can find me everywhere as Dee Romito and @writeforapples.
Tell us one surprising/interesting/fun fact about yourself!
I’m a big Star Wars fan and almost all of my books have a Star Wars reference hidden somewhere in the story. 😊 See if you can find them in the Fort Builders, Inc. books!
