How long have you been writing?
The cop-out response is “all my life.” But is it really a cop-out if it’s true? I’ve been actively writing and submitting for 30 years!
What did you do before you became an author?
Went to college...? I’m very lucky. I’ve never had a day job (unless you count being a library page when I was in high school and college). I got married very young, and we were able to live on my husband’s salary. When I was considering grad school programs, my husband encouraged me to take a year to “try writing.” He said I’d always wonder if I could have been a writer. You bet I’m still married to him!
What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
Hearing from readers.
What inspired you to write this book?
My younger son adopted a cat and the first time he came over after he adopted this cat, our dog started sniffing him. I’m certain he could tell Andy had adopted a cat...and I started imagining what he would say to that cat, and what the cat would say back. Then I realized that could make a good series...if I changed the characters a bit.
What type of book are you writing? What draws you to this category?
Chapter book series. I love chapter books because they’re bridge books, the books that (ideally) turn kids into lifelong readers. They’re able to read on their own, but maybe aren’t quite ready for full middle grade novels. That’s an exciting audience to write for. Chapter books ideally turn kids into lifelong readers!
What would you like potential readers to know about your book?
Dear Beast is an epistolary series and about a dog and cat who learn to share the boy who goes back and forth between each of them and his divorced parents.
What are your social media handles?
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself!
Both my parents are only children, so I don't have any aunts, uncles or cousins. And I was an only child until I was almost 9 years old. So I spent a lot of time by myself as a kid. I think this is, in part, why I became a writer. I wrote stories to entertain myself...and never really grew out of it.
