How long have you been writing and illustrating?
I’ve been illustrating books since 2003. Somewhere in there, I thought I’d try my hand at writing too. I loved it, and my first book came out in 2006.
What did you do before you became an author-illustrator?
Oh, the potpourri of jobs I had before I realized I HAD to do something creative… I’ll put it this way, I can take your blood pressure, teach your kids to skate, and make you a side of hash-browns (scattered, covered, and smothered).
What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
That incredible feeling when an idea takes hold and won’t let me go.
What inspired you to write this book?
One of my critique partners said something that set my mind alight. She said the word “FROG.” Within 48 hours, I had that puppy plotted, written, critiqued, sketched, and in my agent’s inbox. If only they all went like that!!
What type of book are you writing? What draws you to this category?
These are emergent readers for ACORN - the new younger-sibling of the Scholastic BRANCHES line, and I couldn’t be happier to have Frog and Dog be a part of it. I remember to this day, the excitement I felt when I learned to read (thank you, Dr. Seuss).
What would you like potential readers to know about your book?
I hope they make you laugh!
