How long have you been writing? I started writing in 2016, so it’s been three years now. What did you do before you became an author? What other work do you do? I’m a product designer in Silicon Valley. I’ve designed all sorts of stuff, like kids’ experiences, cars, art installations, and robots. What is your favorite thing about being a writer? There are so many things! I think the part I love the most is that I can create something from nothing... and if it appeals to the quirky publishing world, then suddenly I get to work with a great team to bring it to life and share it with kids! It’s an amazing process. What inspired you to write this book? I started writing to empower kids in STEAM and coding. Technology is so much fun and the basic concepts are easy to understand. I wanted to bring that to a wide range of kids, in a fun and accessible way. What type of book are you writing? What draws you to this category? Layla and the Bots is an illustrated early chapter book. My amazing agent, Elizabeth Bennett, actually suggested I try the format, and it clicked instantly for me. The characters had been vaguely floating around in my head, in different combinations, but I could never quite fit them into a picture book. The richer format of the early chapter book was perfect!
